RIDDOR and claiming compensation for an accident at work

Your employer must legally report an accident which happens in the work place and one which results in hospital treatment. If an accident at work causes you to be absent at work for three days or more, it must also be reported to the relevant authorities by your employer."The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995", otherwise known as RIDDOR outlines the responsibilities and legal duties of employers after accidents at work.

The regulations state that an employer must report a serious accident at work to the incident contact centre of the Health and Safety Executive. If a work accident causes serious injury or a fatality, it must be reported as soon as possible to the Health and Safety Executive by the employer and an accident report form must be filed in within ten days of the accident occurring. Some serious injuries which must be reported to the relevant body include fractures, loss of sight, loss of limb and all eye injuries.

Some injuries appear minor, but you should seek urgent medical help as soon as possible following an accident at work, in case you have more serious underlying injuries. An employer must keep all details of the accident in a log book or accident at work book and it is prudent to keep a personal copy of all details of the accident, which will come in useful if you decide to pursue a claim against your employer for your injuries.Work place accidents can be caused by negligence on the part of your employer, or by a fellow employee. If you suffer injury as a result of that negligence, you may be entitled to make a claim against your employer.
